The Orchard at 240 Marshland Road offers a wide range of apples and pears. All apples and pears are grown onsite at our family orchard. Think an apple is just an apple? Think again...
All time classic varieties that have been around for centuries or those that you may struggle to find on a supermarket shelf are offered here, catering for a wide range of palettes and dishes. You too can become a discerning connoisseur of the world’s most popular fruit.
Come and find out how large a Peasgood’s Nonsuch apple can grow and just how fluffy the Lord Wolseley’s is when cooked. Are you looking for a baking apple that best holds its shape when cooked? Come try the Reinette du Canada.
For an apple with a low acidity, you can’t beat a Golden Delicious or a sweet Spartan.

Established in 1981, the Orchard has focused on delivering export quality fruit to the local market in Christchurch and to the wider Canterbury area. Many companies send New Zealand’s best produce overseas; here you will find the season’s best available for you and your family to enjoy!
Eating Apples
Worcester Pearmain - Available from mid February
Crisp and sweet strawberry flavour when ripe. Best if eaten early in season
Fiesta - Available from mid February
A popular apple for its similar flavour to Cox Pippin. Typically sweeter but milder than the Cox
Cox Orange Pippin - Available from mid February
This is the benchmark for flavor in apples - from a good tree in a good year it can achieve exceptional flavor
Spartan - Available from late February
Attractive, crunchy, sweet and juicy and with the delicate wine-like flavor of the McIntosh family of apples. Very popular with children.
Kidd's Orange - Available from late February
Marries the complex aromatic qualities of English Cox apples with the scented flavour of American Delicious.
Royal Gala - Available from late February
Orange-red sweet, crisp medium-size fruit. Another variety developed in NEW ZEALAND. Thinner skin. Popular with children.
Annaglo - Available from late February
Red version of Royal Gala, very sweet and juicy.
Southern Snap - Available from early March
Bright red apple with a rich tangy flavour. The flesh is crisp and juicy.
Jonathan - Available from late March
A classic American variety, and widely regarded as one of the best flavoured with a good sweet/sharp balance. Nice and juicy.
Braeburn - Lochbuie - Available from late March
Originally a NEW ZEALAND variety, this firm fleshed apple is very popular, sweet with moderate tartness.
Pacific Queen - Available from late March
Pacific Rose - Available from late March
An attractive new late-season high-quality dessert apple, this variety also hails from NEW ZEALAND. Royal Gala and Splendor mix.
Fuji - Available from late March
A very popular apple, crisp with honey sweet-flavour Developed in Japan, based on Red Delicious and Ralls Janet.
Golden Delicious - Available from late March
A distinctive green to yellow honeyed sweet and juicy, easy to enjoy either as an eating or cooking variety. Thinner skin. Low acid.
Hawke's Bay Red Delicious - Available from late March
A sweet apple with dark red striped skin, skin thinner than Red Delicious.
Splendour - Available from April
Large, pinky-red apple with crisp crunchy white flesh. Thinner skin. Sweet with very good flavour.
Pink Lady - Available from April
Originally an Australian variety which is moderately sweet with a distinctive flavour based on two crossed varieties: Lady Williams and Golden Delicious.
Cooking Apples
Peasgood's Nonsuch - Available from mid February
Very large, highly esteemed cooking apple. Yellow-green fruit deepening to orange-yellow. Great for baking pies and apple cake.
Reinette du Canada - Available from March
Old French variety 1771, with a firm green skin. Very good sharp flavour. Late season dessert apple and cooks well.
Belle de Boskoop - Available from mid March
This large chunky apple, was introduced in the 1850s in the Netherlands. It is suitable for both dessert and cooking, is very firm and has a sharp flavour.
Gewuerzluiken - Available from mid March
An older, 'heritage' variety of apple, this firm, greenish-white flesh has a sweet, slightly acid flavour. Originally - Germany, 1950s.
Lord Wolseley - Available from late March
Light and fluffy when cooked.
Ballarat - Available from April
Large green with red blush apple excellent for cooking. Sour flavour apple with dense texture. Originated in Australia in early 1900s
Granny Smith - Available from April
Classic bright green apple. Crisp and firm, tart with a hint of sugar. Originally an Australian variety from 1868. Very versatile for baking, juicing, eating, or in salads or fruit platters.
Sturmer Pippin - Available from April
A popular Victorian dessert apple variety, notable for its exceptional keeping qualities, some red blush.
